Frequently Asked Questions

Can one centavo really make a difference?
Though one centavo (roughly USD 0.0002) may seem like a small amount, it is the thousands of people all over the world playing the video game Wordtrotter at the same time that really makes a difference.

The Play for Scholars Project aims to involve individuals, youth groups, civic organizations, media, and corporations worldwide in changing the lives of poor students.

You can either play the game or sponsor the players to be a part of this circle of kindness. Do whatever your heart tells you.

Let’s do this together and show that even a small change can make a world of change.
Can you tell me more about the Play 4 Scholars Project?
The Play 4 Scholars Project is a play-to-give drive that encourages people to raise funds for the benefit of Caritas Manila’s over 8,000 scholars by simply playing the video game Wordtrotter.

It provides a fun and educational way of helping poor kids – at no cost to you.

All you have to do is click on the Play Now button and you’re on your way to changing their lives.

The project’s web site (www.play4scholars.com) allows you to play Wordtrotter, boost your vocabulary, have fun, and earn one centavo at a time to help send poor kids to school.

For each word that you get right, a sponsor donates one centavo to Caritas Manila’s scholarship fund in your name. It is pooled with other donations to provide the scholars and their families with the following benefits:
  • formal and non-formal education--elementary, high school, college, and vocational levels
  • values formation for leadership, family life, and environment protection
  • sacramental appreciation
  • primary health care, nutrition, and crisis intervention
  • child rights protection
  • livelihood and skills training
  • opportunities for self/wage employment
  • other socio-economic development programs
Who are the people behind the Play 4 Scholars Project?
The Executive Director of Caritas Manila, Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual and Wordtrotter creator Gil De Palma team up to bring on the Play 4 Scholars Project.

Gil’s friends and co-founders of the video game company Gameris, Lawyer Ma. Arlene M. Mendoza and entrepreneur Johnny I. Tamayo are also with them in this play-to-give fund raising drive.
Can you tell me more about the Wordtrotter video game?
Wordtrotter is a word game, a puzzle game, and a casual action game rolled into one that allows players to catch runaway alphabet characters to form a word.

The game is about the uncanny word bugs known as Wordtrotters that must risk their lives in a perilous quest to catch runaway alphabet bugs and form the Anti-Spell, a secret magical word that will save the world from being destroyed by the curse of an evil witch.

Interacting with other game characters will yield word clues like synonyms, antonyms, or definitions, enhancing and upgrading your word arsenal in the process.

Can playing Wordtrotter really help build my vocabulary?
Wordtrotter will methodically enrich your vocabulary by making you interact with the words. Once you “meet” a game word, it will stick with you for a lifetime.

It is sticky, addictive, and so much fun that you will hardly notice that you are actually enriching your vocabulary as you play!

How does the play-to-give system work?
When you play Wordtrotter, our system randomly assigns a sponsor to be your partner for each game stage.

Kind-hearted sponsors (companies, brands, organizations, and private individuals) have pledged to support the Play 4 Scholars Project. Their names, logos, or brands will be briefly displayed every time you catch a correct game word.

The system keeps track of every word that you get right and updates both your personal donation total and the sponsor donation total.

Caritas Manila uses this information to bill your partner sponsors for your donations.
Will sponsors really donate to Caritas Manila in my name?
Yes. If you are a registered player, your partner sponsors will donate to Caritas Manila in your name.

So, before you start playing Wordtrotter, sign up or log in now.

You will receive an email regarding the details of your donations. Your Play 4 Scholars site profile will also display the total amount you have donated to help you keep track of the money you have helped raise.
If Play 4 Scholars has sponsors, why not donate their money right away?
The Play 4 Scholars Project is simply a website dedicated to helping Caritas Manila raise funds for its scholarship program. The project does not hold or collect money from its sponsors. It only provides a platform for players and sponsors to reach out and help build a better future for poor kids.

By playing Wordtrotter, you are earning the money that pays for their scholarship requirements.

Caritas Manila handles billing, collection, and management of sponsorship payments.
How much does it take to send one Caritas Manila scholar to school?
Every year, Caritas Manila allots PhP 5,000 (roughly USD 105.43) each for elementary and high school scholars; PhP 12,000 (roughly USD 253.03) for college and vocational scholars.
I’m not from the Philippines; can I still play for Caritas Manila scholars?

How can I help spread the word about the Play 4 Scholars Project?
You may use the home page share options and create a link on your blogs or web pages using the Play 4 Scholars logo to easily spread the word and refer people to the site.

The success of the Play 4 Scholars project lies in the number of people playing to give. Talking about Play 4 Scholars in your blogs, forums, or communities can definitely make a difference, too.
How can I become a Play 4 Scholars sponsor?
Any individual, organization, company, or brand willing to pitch in and help change the future of poor children can be a part of the Play 4 Scholars Project’s circle of kindness.

It begins with your sponsorship pledge. You may pledge any amount that you are willing to give. Your donation will only be used one centavo at a time.

Caritas Manila will bill and collect your sponsorship payment based on the number of times the Play 4 Scholars system chooses you to be a partner sponsor, the number of game words your partner players get right, and the volume of sponsors.

You will regularly receive emails regarding the status of your sponsorship. Your Play 4 Scholars site profile will also display your sponsorship details.
